Stripe  (moving)

Audio tape   During a study of the possibilities of audio tape and tape recording - 1/4" audio tape format - I made some real long loops of tape.

An interesting effect occurred: while the 'black' tape moved invisible, a piece of white leader tape - patched between the loop - suddenly marked the movement.

At first I tried this - in reverse: a black stripe marked the movement - on a white table in the classroom of the Academy, but later I made a dedicated column for a little show of the study results of my class in 1977.
'Stripe' - column, audio tape & leader tape - 1977

I first tried the 'moving stripe' on a white trestle table: made from a simple assembly of a tape recorder and audio tape with white leader tape.

Surprise The effect was a complete surprise, nobody noticed the white leader tape, but when after a while the black audio tape followed there was a sense of disbelief.

The stripe however, wasn't only an effect: it also gave a very strong graphical and - by slowly dividing a plane - 'spatial' impression.
